At first look, Ohio may not seem like it would be one of the greatest golf states in America. As it turns out, Ohio has one of the most avid golf populations in the country, surrounded by some of the best courses in the country, with some of the most golf history in the country. Ohio is as much a golf mecca (in the warm months) as Florida, and Columbus is not only the state capital, but undoubtedly it’s golf capital.
Columbus is home to two of the most storied golf courses in the nation with one very important commonality: Jack Nicklaus. Nicklaus, the greatest golfer of all time, was born in Columbus in 1940. He took up the game at 10 years old and has written the history of golf in Columbus as he wrote his own history. He learned the game at what is still one of the premier country clubs in Ohio, Scioto Country Club. Scioto is one of the few courses in the nation to have hosted five different Major Championships, and it’s membership is understandably expensive. The course boasts an incredible championship golf course and indoor/outdoor practice facility, a 70,000 foot clubhouse, four swimming pools, a workout facility, eleven tennis courts, and so much more. All of that and the biggest draw to join the club is still the fact that Nicklaus learned to play there!
The best course in Columbus (and all of Ohio) however, is Muirfield Village Golf Club, Nicklaus’ home course. Muirfield Village is Jack’s lifelong passion project. The land was purchased in 1966 but construction did not begin for six years. The course did not open until 1974 and has hosted Nicklaus’ personal PGA Tour event, The Memorial, every year since 1976. The course is the top rated in Ohio and the 13th best course in the country.
Columbus golf is not just for the elite, however. There are wonderful public access golf courses all over the area. The highlight of Columbus area public tracks is Virtues Golf Club, located forty minutes east of Columbus in Nashport. It’s fair but challenging layout and beautiful conditioning make have given it national acclaim, and at under $60, it’s a steal.
If you want to spend less and stay local, Columbus has a wonderful municipal course system as well with six eighteen hole layouts. Two of the courses hardly resemble public golf courses, as their championship layouts were designed by the famous Robert Trent Jones. The premier course, called Champions Golf Course, features rolling fairways, massive mature trees, undulating greens, and is a stout test for any golfer. The best part? Tee times are often less than $30!
