The state of South Carolina is abundant enough with golf courses that you could get away with playing a new one every day of the year, and while the coastal regions of the state attract considerable attention from the golf world, many of South Carolina's most beautiful and challenging links can be found scattered throughout the Upstate. In the not-too-distant past, golfers would flock there to escape the summer heat and experience the reputed healing powers of the mineral springs. It's still worth it now to stray from the beaten path to witness golf terrain unlike any other, with awe-inspiring backdrops of the Blue Ridge Mountains and rolling, hilly vistas of the Upcountry.
The Preserve at Verdae is a great place to start. First built in 1991, this 18-hole championship course sits on more than 100 acres of natural beauty on the outskirts of downtown Greenville. The course was designed by Willard Byrd, and happens to be the only one in Upstate South Carolina to feature Mini-Verde Bermuda greens, with a mission to “strive for harmony between golf and nature.” Unique landscaping features incorporate native plants and grasses, and foster settings that welcome local wildlife.
The most celebrated tracks of the area can be discovered at The Cliffs Communities, which is a collection of high-end residential neighborhoods including courses from Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player. Furman University G.C. is another top contender, which University planner (and Furman University campus designer) Richard K. Webel laid the foundations for in the late 1950s. It's perhaps best known for its decorated alumni, which includes LPGA Hall of Famers Betsy King and Beth Daniel, along with Dottie pepper and the PGA Tour's Brad Faxon. The course might seem short to some (measuring 6,825 yards from the tips), but the tree-lined Bermuda fairways utilize enough bend to place an emphasis on accuracy.
