Located in the South Central Region of the United States, the Sooner State of Oklahoma traverses an area of roughly 70,000 square miles and its panhandle of three counties in the north west of the state create one of ten such land border anomalies to be found throughout the entire country. The Oklahoma Golf Association, which was founded in 1910, currently operates ten annual competitions for members of the 200 clubs that operate within the state. The Women's Oklahoma Golf Association is the largest of three associations representing women who golf, and runs six annual tournaments for female golfers.
Tulsa is the city at the crux of the state's golf culture, and features a variety of nationally heralded courses. Southern Hills, close to downtown Tulsa, rounds out the top of the list by a distance. The formidable Perry Maxwell layout from 1936 has hosted seven major tournaments (four U.S. Opens and three USPGA Championships). And if not for the Great Depression and the Tulsa Country Club, Southern Hills might never have been built.
Tulsa Country Club, the city's oldest private golf course (and the state's second oldest), commissioned legendary U.S. Open architect A.W. Tillinghast to design the course and moved it from 13th and Utica to its current location. TCC hosted a 1984 Senior PGA event and has also been the home grounds for countless regional U.S. Open and Amateur Qualifying tournaments. The course was refurbished by in 1988 by Jay Morrish, former chief architect for Jack Nicklaus. While Southern Hills remains one of the nation's elite courses, Tulsa Country Club has managed to become a well-kept secret in the golf world.
Forest Ridge is another great choice, and happens to be the area's first upscale public golf facility, which opened in October 1989. The facility is open and unrestricted to everyone which creates an atmosphere more commonly reserved for member-only golf courses. A southern-style clubhouse provides a full service restaurant that overlooks impeccably manicured greens.
