Greensboro, NC Golf Lessons

Close-Up: The Golf Scene In Greensboro, NC

The third most populated city in the state of North Carolina is home to some impressive golf courses, three of which made the top 50 list in the country according to Golf Advisor. And with a dense legacy of staging PGA Tour events, Greensboro is certainly a city rich with golf. The city staked its reputation with the Greensboro Open (which later evolved into the Wyndham Championship), and has been a regular stop on the PGA Tour since 1938. The city has more than 15 golf courses, 500 restaurants, and easy access to the Piedmont Triad International Airport.

The North Carolina Golf Panel annually attempts the task of naming the state's top 100 courses, where members judge based on individual features and merit, and then measure them against other layouts. Among the best of the best is Grandover Resort in Greensboro, which contains a signature pair of courses known simply as East and West. Designed by David Graham and Gary Panks, the two courses wind through oaks, pines, and dogwoods throughout the resort's sprawling 1,500 acres.

The Greensboro Country Club at Irving Park is another Greensboro destination worth mentioning. The 18-hole “Farm” course includes 7,376 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course features a humbling history, including a water oak tree known as “The Club House,” where 105 years ago some of the first, hardy golfers in the club (back then it was free entry) used to hang up their jackets before teeing off. Now the club includes two 18-hole courses, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a fitness facility, two swimming pools, and a number of dining options.
