As one of the oldest cities in America, Boston has some of the oldest, most beautiful, and historic golf facilities in the nation. The city of Boston, by comparison, has a reasonably small golf program. There are only two courses owned and operated by the city, but they are excellent! The George Wright Golf Course is a superb Donald Ross design that has been around since the 1920’s, and stands up to any municipal golf course you can find. More importantly, it will stand up to even the most skilled golfers. The other municipal course is the William Devine Course at Franklin Park. Both courses are ranked in the top 5 by Golf Advisor for best courses in the greater Boston area.
Just because the city only owns two courses does not mean there is not an abundance of high-quality public golf offerings all over. Boston proper is actually a relatively small city, but it’s suburbs are sprawling and densely populated, meaning that there are golf courses in nearly every town/city surrounding Boston totalling hundreds of courses. The runaway favorite is the Oaks Course at The International. The International is a gorgeous resort in Bolton, Massachusetts and features two courses, both world famous. While the Oaks is considered the better of the two courses, The Pines, it’s sister course, is the longest course on the planet and consistently ranked one of the most difficult.
Boston is, however, known for it’s elite, old-school private country clubs. None more famous than The Country Club. Located in Brookline, it is the oldest country club in the nation, thus rightfully earning its name as simply The Country Club. It was established in 1882 and was one of 5 charter clubs that founded the USGA. As a founding member, it has a rich history of hosting USGA events, hosting a total of fourteen through the years. It is most famous for the 1999 Ryder Cup, where the United States staged an incredible comeback to defeat Team Europe by one point. It will next host the U.S Open in 2022.
Luckily, Boston golf fans do not have to wait to see professional golf until 2022 as Boston annually hosts the Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts. It is the opening event of the important FedEx Cup Playoffs, meaning it draws the best players in the world, huge crowds, and an enormous purse. As one of the great American sports cities, Bostonians come out in huge numbers to support the tournament and it is a favorite among the players.
