The Hawkeye State of Iowa sits flat in the midwest region of the country, and Des Moines is both its capital and largest city. The state's eastern border is kissed by the Mississippi River, which delineates the divide between Nebraska and the Missouri and Big Souix Rivers—all of which form a boundary with Wisconsin. Anyone who writes off the state's terrain as simply “flat” has clearly never payed a visit to some of the region's most historic courses, like Waveland, which is over 100 years old and features rolling hills, uneven lies, and massive oak trees. The Tournament Club of Iowa (TCI) is another prime example. The only Arnold Palmer designed course in the state, TCI's challenging layout cuts through the natural Iowa woodlands and prairies. It lends itself well to resort style golf with no shortage of creeks, ponds, and dramatic elevation changes.
There's a Golden Age layout that deserves special mention, which is none other than William Langford's Wakonda Club. Completed in 1922, the club hasn't been entirely immune to alterations over the years but it's still well-worth trying to befriend a member in order to snag a game or two. That being said, the best in the state by a longshot is the Keith Foster millennial creation at Harvester. For those seeking picturesque Iowa scenery, look no further: The Harvester boasts fast undulating greens, high fescue grass, and rolling hills carved right into the landscape that are the epitome of the Midwest. To sweeten the deal, this course is a public access track that allows daily fee pay.
The Iowa Golf Association has been serving male golfers in the state since 1900, and currently includes 170 clubs. The women's equivalent, the Iowa Women's Golf Association, was formed in 1927 though it's worth noting female golfers have been playing tournaments in conjunction with men's state events since 1902.
Those planning on a visit in the late summer months should check out the Solheim Cup in August, 2017. It's the Ryder Cup equivalent for the LPGA, so all eyes in the golf world will be trained on Des Moines!
