Houston is one of the most populous cities in America, and with it’s comfortable year-round climate, it is no surprise that there is an outstanding golf scene! The city of Houston’s Parks and Rec Department and Municipal Golf program are at the forefront of growing the game in the area and keeping it accessible for everyone. They own and operate 7 eighteen hole facilities, ranging from Memorial Park, former PGA TOUR host site and widely considered one of the best municipal courses in the nation, to more affordable, playable courses like Brock Park. They are also partnered with The First Tee of Greater Houston to help get more children into golf regardless of their financial situation.
The First Tee of Greater Houston is one of the largest and most active sections in the First Tee’s nationwide network. Their programs are operated out of 9 different courses, across 461 schools and 29 school districts, impacting over 300,000 children. They plan to have over 500,000 children in their programs by the year 2020, helping kids improve as human beings through the game of golf. Their charter is owned by the Houston Golf Association, another non-profit using the game of golf as a vessel with which to improve the community. Noticing a theme here? Golf has a deeply rooted tradition in Houston and organizations like these will perpetuate the growth of the game. The Houston Golf Association has put on many amateur and professional events in their history, but their flagship is certainly the Shell Houston Open.
The Shell Houston Open has been a regular event on the PGA TOUR since 1946, making it one of the longest running events on TOUR. With the help of the Houston Golf Association, it has given an incredible $60 million to local charities since 1992. The event consistently draws an incredibly strong field due to its position on the schedule. It is always the week before the Masters, so all of the top players who like a tune-up before the years first major make the annual trip to Houston to play the tournament. Tournament officials have recognized its unique position on tour, and have since manicured the golf course to mimic conditions at Augusta National in hopes of drawing more top talent.
With an average temperature of 70 degrees, over 250 days of sunshine annually, hundreds of courses to choose from, and professional golf to watch, Houston really does have it all for any and every golfer.
