Simply put, San Diego is a golfers paradise. Featuring nearly constant sun, no humidity, gorgeous topography, and a cool ocean breeze, it should come as no surprise that San Diego features nearly 100 18-Hole championship golf courses within a 40 mile radius of downtown San Diego. The courses you will find around every corner in San Diego aren’t your average municipal courses, either. Home to elite country clubs, famed public tracks that have hosted major championships, and more affordable public courses as well, there truly is something for every golfer.
If you are as interested in watching great golf as you are playing great golf, then San Diego is the place for you, too! The famed Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California is consistently rated as one of the best public courses in the nation. It has hosted multiple US Opens, and annually hosts the PGA TOUR’s Farmers Insurance Open. Highlighted by challenging holes set alongside gorgeous cliffs and the very unique Torrey Pine trees, it is one of the premier stops on the TOUR’s “West Coast Swing.” You may come for the golf, but you should stay for the views! After the tournament is over, stick around and play the same layout the pros play. Though tee times are difficult to get and can get pricey, the value for the caliber of the course is largely unmatched no matter where you are.
Watching the pros at Torrey Pines is nothing if not humbling. They make the game look so easy, but for most amateurs, it is anything but. While Torrey Pines may be the most famous and challenging course in the area, there are many other amazing courses. The Maderas Golf Club is known for having views as good (or better!) than Torrey Pines and is often more highly rated than the better known gem. The Barona Creek Golf Course located at the Barona Creek Resort and Casino is widely regarded as one of the best casino courses in the nation, and one of the top courses in the state.
San Diego is also home to the Celebrity Championship hosted by Marshall Faulk. The tournament has been around for nineteen years and is one of the largest and most charitable celebrity golf tournaments in the nation. The event last for four days with the first two being a celebrity/amateur tournament, and the final two days as a celebrity only tournament. There are parties each night, autograph sessions, and much more as the tournament draws some of the biggest names from Hollywood and sports.
