Madison, WI Golf Lessons

Close-Up: The Golf Scene In Madison, WI

West of Milwaukee is the capital city of Wisconsin, known for its rich immigrant and farming history. And anyone who watched the 2004 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits knows that golf in Wisconsin has come quite a long way too. Since 1980, dozens of championship public golf courses have cropped up throughout the state, including one of the nation's best along Lake Michigan in the Straits at Haven.

For residents and visitors, the city of Madison offers four premiere public courses. Located near Madison's near west side, Glenway Golf Course features a par-32 course that was first opened for play to the public back in 1927. The scenic course includes small greens and mature, tree-lined fairways. Bridges Golf Course includes 18 championship holes, a driving range, practice, bunker, and two practice putting and chipping greens (their full lunch and dinner menus are also not to be missed).

The Oaks Golf Course features a simple design from architect Greg Martin that places emphasis on a fair round, with an 18 hole, par-71 course full of pristine natural settings that is great for beginners. Meanwhile, the west side, 18-hole course at Odana Hills is perfect for all experience levels. The course hosts several city tournaments each year, and is one of the most popular in the state due to its scenic landscape and convenient location of the Beltline Highway. Both Madison and the Wisconsin Dells area showcase modern destination courses like University Ridge and Trappers Turn (The Meadows of Sixmile creek at Waunakee also provides challenging terrain, including numerous ponds, to traverse). For those more in the mood for old standbys, the hilly Baraboo Country Club (1962) has a gorgeous, ever-present creek and plays past Indian mounds, while Riverside in Janesville (1924) includes stunning old elm, oak, and linden trees.
