Virginia Beach, VA Golf Lessons

Close-Up: The Golf Scene In Virginia Beach, VA

Don't let all of that sand fool you—the grass is plenty green on the fairways of Virginia Beach. The city brims with a unique collection of golf courses that can provide fun and challenges to golfers of all skill levels and budgets. Visitors will discover quality municipal courses buttressed alongside courses that were built by some of the game's best architects and players, including Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. There are more than 198 holes of golf on Virginia Beach, and many of the courses have taken a note from the city's booming tourism and partnered with hotels to join forces in providing golf vacation packages that include guaranteed tee times and accommodations.

Battlefield is certainly a scenic course worth visiting. Opened in 2007 and built on 1.5 million tons of utility fly ash to create elevation in the dead flat low land swamps of Chesapeake, the idea behind this course was to bring a links-style to an area full of Carolina-style courses. The wind is usually a factor to consider, but likely not nearly as much as if the course were actually on the ocean. There is still plenty of growing to do, being so new, but many seasoned vets revisit Battlefield for greens that are quite nice for such a young course.

It's not very often that a golfer will have the choice between spending their time between a Nicklaus or Palmer course, two of the biggest names in golf, period. Bay Creek's award-winning resort is the first in the country to feature Signature courses from two top names in golf, and which Golf Digest has time and time again ranked among the best in the state, while Golf World placed the 18-hole course 12th in its list of top golf resorts in America.

The Palmer Course is a nature lover's fantasy, with four holes on the shores of Chesapeake Bay, eight on Old Plantation Creek, and several contrasted by the numerous sand dunes and beach bunkers. Jack's design for Bay Creek isn't too shabby either, measuring over 7,400 yards with Tifsport Bermuda fairways and smooth A-4 bent grass greens. The course is best characterized by its large waste bunkers and more than 100 formal bunkers.
