Northern central California is known for it open expanses of land that ring the state's capital of Sacramento--a perfect fit for farms, vineyards, and of course, golf courses. Horse carriage rides through Old Sacramento and catching a night game with the Sacramento Kings pair well with a round of golf during the day.
Teal Bend lies next to the Sacramento River and contains 250 acres of natural wetlands, along with the largest all-grass driving range in the city. The most famous, however, is the headliner right in the heart of town: Haggis Oaks, a versatile, municipal golf complex. The facility contains the Alister MacKenzie Course, which is public and boasts the largest Golf Pro Shop around. Beginners should consider hitting the other course first, Arcade Creek, which is the least challenging of the two.
Ancil Hoffman is another fantastic public course located in Ancil Hoffman Park, which sits between the American River and the Effie Yeaw Nature Center, which creates an unparalleled setting steeped in nature. The course is pretty flat, with very few water hazards, although it does include large bunkers to look out for. It's also worth looking out for wild geese, turkey, and deer—all of which are known to roam the track.
Speaking of turkey, Turkey Creek offers a public course that provides more of the serene Sacramento scenery. The centerpiece is an old granite quarry, which is now a lake. A number of streams snake through the course and many of the greens feature tiered and sloped designs. Don't worry about getting lost though—all of the carts are equipped with GPS!
For the last 50 years, Bing Maloney has entertained golfers with a classic design that keeps them coming back. The course features two courses complemented by a driving range, along with a fantastic chipping green and sand bunker. The putting green is known to put golfers to the test, but the best part about Bing Maloney is the difficulty level is perfectly meted to appease both beginners and experts alike.
