Austin, Texas is known for regularly playing host to big bands as one of the music capitals of the country. Recently, however, and much more to our liking, Austin is home to seriously big drives! As of 2016, Austin is now the annual host of the Dell Match Play World Golf Championship each March. World Golf Championships are just one tier below the four major tournaments held each year, making them incredibly elite. Only the top 64 players in the world are guaranteed entry into the tournament, and as the only match play tournament on the entire PGA TOUR schedule, it’s a favorite for players and fans alike.
Back to the “big drives” comment… the tournament is held at Austin Country Club, a beautiful course with major elevation changes and very firm fairways. That all adds up to outrageous driving statistic where players on certain holes are known to drive the ball over four hundred and fifty yards! Now that’s entertainment.
Watching the pros play for a week in March is great, but Austin is also a fantastic place to play golf year-round. Golf ATX is the city of Austin’s public golf division. They do a wonderful job of providing high quality golf experiences for their residents at very reasonable rates. They operate six different full-length courses, and also a short course practice facility. The topography is variable in Austin, so each course is unique, from hilly to flat and challenging to forgiving.
The flagship of the municipal facilities is undoubtedly the Grey Rock Golf Club. The facility has the look and feel of a private country club with wonderful amenities and even a tennis facility. Though it is public, they do have membership options which include unlimited golf at not only Grey Rock, but also at every city of Austin golf course! Now that’s a deal.
If you have money to blow, the Omni Barton Creek resort is one of the finest golfing destination resorts in the nation. The resort has four courses, two designed by Tom Fazio, one by Arnold Palmer, and a final one by the dynamic duo of Coore and Crenshaw. As if four world-class golf courses were not enough, the resort has an incredible spa, five star accommodations, a kids camp, multiple restaurants, and so much more.
If the Omni Barton Creek is a little rich for your blood, then there is an incredibly fun offering for you at the other end of the spectrum. Willie Nelson’s Cut’n’Putt is a short 9 hole course actually owned by the legend Willie Nelson. The course is 100% about fun, and sort-of about golf. The course uses its own set of rules, poking fun at the stuffiness of traditional golf. It is rumored that of the hundreds of thousands of rounds played there, nobody has ever reported not having fun! Willie Nelson’s recording studio is also in the clubhouse, so there is some musical history to find there as well.
