Locals love Portland with about as much enthusiasm as the magazines who often laud the city for its livability, and a large reason behind that has to do with its abundance of outdoor activities. The rain subsides with the arrival of the warmer months, and golf becomes a huge draw. When it does rain, residents cozy up to one of the cities countless coffee shops or more than two dozen microbreweries. As one of the country's top pub towns, golfers can rest assured that they will find some of the finest 19th holes here.
Portland has a rock-solid municipal golf system, which begins with two golf courses at Heron Lakes located just a few miles from downtown. Both are Robert Trent Jones Jr. designs featuring varying degrees of difficulty, with the daunting Great Blue serving as 2000 U.S. Public Links championship host. The historic Eastmoreland Golf Course provides a quaint step back in time; its gorgeous layout full of scenery and wildlife date all the way back to 1917. Redtail Golf Course and Rose City Golf Course help round out the top five affordable offerings run by the city.
Pumpkin Ridge remains one of the northwest's most nationally heralded and prestigious clubs. It features a private golf course and one open to the public, Ghost Creek, that is a rolling, Bob Cupp-helmed parkland test featuring a rocky creek that challenges golfers throughout the round.
Driving south from the city towards Salem, wayfaring golfers can enjoy two popular, daily-fee golf courses for low handicappers which were both founded during the 1990s golf boom, Langdon Farms and the Oregon Golf Association Golf Course, which are both regular local and regional tournament hosts. And while beer is a huge draw in Portland, so too is wine, and the Reserve Vineyards in Aloha contain two noteworthy semi-private golf courses in the heart of Oregon's wine country.
