“Cleveland Rocks” was totally a thing during the Drew Carey show from 1995-2004, and that very same unapologetic pride continues to flourish in this rustbelt city, giving locales fuel to endure sports heartache after heartache including NBA's Cavaliers, NFL's Browns, and the MLB's Indians. At least they've got the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...
Fortunately for golf fans, Cleveland has a lot to offer. Old-school layouts from giants of the past like Stanley Thompson, Harry Colt, Charles Alison, and Donald Ross are juxtaposed against designs from Pete Dye and Dr. Michael Hurdzan. Local architect Brian Huntley is known for some amazing work as well, and the real kicker? All of these courses are located within an hour of the downtown area.
Tucked away in the heart of Parma, Ohio, Ridgewood Golf Course has seen many alterations over the years yet still continues to be termed by golf writers of Cleveland as the city's ideal golf layout, thanks in large part to the fact that it's quite possible for the average player to score well and yet the scratch player never risks burning up the course. The course has hosted many local, district, and state championships, along with one national championship. Walter Hagen, Billy Burke, Babe Zaharias, and Arnold Palmer are just a few of the legends that used to walk the grounds.
The city's public golf scene has deep roots. Golf Magazine cited six courses in the area among the state's top 11 public courses in 2012. Two classic courses were honored in the publication, Stanley Thompson's Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Brecksville and Donald Ross's Hawthorne Valley Golf Club in Solon. Ross also played a hand in designing the challenging Manakiki Golf Course, a Cleveland Metroparks course located in Willoughby Hills. For those in search of a more contemporary feel, the Legacy Course at Sweetbriar Golf Club west of Cleveland and Grey Hawk Golf Club in Lagrange are both worth paying a visit.
