What's not to like about summer golf in the Pacific Northwest? One destination that tends to fly under the radar is Spokane, Inland Northwest's metropolitan center and the state of Washington's second largest city. It doesn't get much better than Spokane during the summer months, with over 250 days of sunshine, more than 30 local golf courses, and green fees that rarely go higher than $30—even on weekends. It's not a tough hike to the city either, which is roughly four hours from Seattle and a little over five from Portland.
While playing a game at any of Spokane County's three beautiful courses (MeadowWood, Liberty Lake, and Hangman Valley) is a must, the trip to Spokane simply wouldn't be complete without paying a visit to Indian Canyon, which sits just a few minutes from Northern Quest Casino. Evoking older tradition, the H. Chandler Egan design is home of the Rosauers Open Invitational and is certainly no stranger to praise from the golf elite; the course has been selected many times by Golf Digest as one of the top 25 public courses in the country. Some of the signature features include narrow tree-lined fairways and a host of significant elevation changes, including uphill, downhill, and sidehill lies. Aside from the gorgeous greens, incredible sight lines of the Canyon overlooking the Lilac City make for tremendous twilight excursions and sunsets.
As for the others, Qualchan is Spokane's newest course, and keynotes include a creek that meanders throughout the course, along with five ponds, wooded and hilly areas, and is located on a sanctuary for a variety of bird species and wildlife. Conversely, Downriver is the city's oldest course, and is nestled between the tall pines along the Spokane River and Riverside State Park. Established in 1916, Downriver has hosted a number of major tournaments and provides challenges to golfers of all experiences. Last is Esmeralda, a course located in Northeast Spokane that was constructed in 1956. It's often considered the city's “most playable course” by seniors and beginners alike, and features plenty of open space and flat fairways.
