Playing golf in Wisconsin can easily lead to what many players refer to as “status golf,” which is made possible by a state that boasts some of the best courses in the country. Taking a day-long sojourn to Whistling Straits near Sheboygan lands green fees of $370; factor in the caddy for $60 (and a recommended tip of $40), and that's almost half a thousand dollars for a round of golf.
Fortunately, Milwaukee also includes plenty of fun and challenging courses within an hour drive of the city that won't break the bank yet still demand plenty of skill.
Leading the pack is Brown Deer Park. An oft-cited golf fan favorite, this jewel of Milwaukee County clocks in at just over 6,700 yards. It was originally designed by George Hansen and was founded in 1929, though was partially redesigned by Andy North and Roger Packard. The first hole sets the pace, with almost 450 yards and a dogleg right. The challenging layout features 60 sand-filled bunkers, tree-lined fairways, with water winding through the course, and has hosted PGA Tour and USGA national championships. With a county card visitors can play Brown Deer Park for under $50.
Next up is Naga-Waukee War Memorial Golf Course. Noted golf architect, Lawrence Packard, turned 200 wooded, Kettle Moraine acres into a beautiful and challenging, irrigated, 18-hole championship golf course. Breathtaking views of Pewaukee Lake turn this golfing experience into an unforgettable one. The clubhouse also offers a pro shop, food and beverages, and locker facilities. Golfers can enjoy this course for less than $40!
Johnson Park in Racine is a relatively unknown course where it's easy to land tee time and makes for one of the most affordable golf courses in the area (at less than $30). The 18-hole course features eccentric, beautiful holes that border the Root River, which winds through the thick woods surrounding the course and makes Johnson Park a destination for golfers from all over Southeastern Wisconsin. Though it definitely caters to the public, the course also attracts numerous tournaments including the Wisconsin Junior Tour, Racine Tri-Course, and the prestigious Junior Masters.
