Maryland (or the “Free State”) is often considered to be a perfect microcosm of the climactic varieties and topographical extremes that the country embodies, which is why it's earned another nickname--”America in Miniature.” This fares well (pun intended) for golfers who are seeking diversity in their gameplay. Despite being one of the smallest states, Maryland boasts a long-standing golfing history, which many believe can be traced back to the mid-18th century. Definitively, however, the Maryland State Golf Association was formed in 1921 and now looks after around 160 golf clubs across the state.
When talking about Baltimore, thoughts of crab cakes and the Orioles will likely surface, but the city also contains a thriving golf scene. For the golfing aficionado, the classic Baltimore Country Club, inaugurated in 1898, hosted the U.S. Open only one year later. Although it took until 1926 to open the course to the public, the wait was worth it. Tthe Country Club was designed by A.W. Tillinghast, one of the great geniuses of golf course architecture. Five Farms, once just the suburban course, is now the hub of the club. It's located amid the rolling hills of the state's “hunt country,” where horses have always been the go-to sport from which golf is taking over.
Venture nearby to White Hall to experience the splendor of Greystone Golf Course. The championship course was designed by Joe Lee and includes more than 140 feet of elevation changes. Other notable entries to the list include The Woodlands in Windsor Mills which has a state-of-the-art clubhouse; its equally stunning sister course Diamond Ridge Golf Course; the private, tucked-away Fox Hollow Golf Club; Essex's picturesque Rocky Point Golf Course; and of course the absolute classic Forest Park Golf Course, where golfers in the area have been playing for generations.
